The first day of the Tamil month called Chithirai (14th April) is celebrated as the beginning of a New Year in the Tamil calendar. It also marks the Sun’s transit into the sign Aries.
It is celebrated as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Visu in Kerala and Baisakhi in Central and north india.
The Festive Prosperity Tray Ritual
The idea behind the Tray Ritual is to bring prosperity, good luck, and happiness into the home in the coming year. It is believed that the first thing a person sees on the day of Vishu (New Year) sets the tone for the rest of the year. Therefore, the tray is prepared in such a way that it represents abundance, beauty, and positivity.

Prepare a tray with the following items on the 13th of April
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Gold or silver jewellery
- Cash (currency bills) and coins
- New clothes
- Flowers
- Picture or idol of your favourite deity
Now place this tray in front of a vertical mirror which reflects the tray perfectly.
When you wake up on the 14th, this mirror should be the first thing you see.
The significance of this ritual is to know that you have everything you need and whatever you need will be provided for. The tray is considered as the symbol of prosperity. It serves as a reminder to appreciate the abundance in our lives, to seek positivity, and to strive for a prosperous future.
