After nine days of Navratri, the tenth day, which is celebrated as Dusserah or Vijayadashami signifies the victory of good over evil.

The tenth day after Navratri also signifies the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

On this day, we celebrate the victory of magnanimity over pettiness, of the big mind over the small mind.

On Vijayadasami, people make an auspicious beginning of art and learning. Children who are to start their education are admitted in a school on Vijayadasami. People who also want to pursue the learning of any art and craft forms commence their studies on Vijayadasami. Vijayadasami forms an auspicious day to start any process of learning as it is dedicated Goddess Saraswati, the source of all knowledge. People place their books and tools before the picture of the Goddess for worship.

It is proven over years and years that any new venture started on this day is bound to be successful.  Hence in most parts of India Vijayadashami is selected for starting a new businesses, construction activities (house, building, hospital), taking possession of new house, buying new vehicle, buying gold, booking the first order for the business etc…
