Utpanna Ekadashi is the origin of Ekadashi fasting. People who would like to begin Ekadashi fasting usually start on Utpanna Ekadashi which occurs after the full moon of Karthik month.
Ekadashi fasting is known to wash away sins not just from this lifetime but all our past lifetimes as well. Utpanna Ekadashi is celebrated as Lord Vishnu’s victory over a demon called “Murasura”. This is why Lord Vishnu is called Murari – Mura + Ari which means enemy.
A maiden appeared from Lord Vishnu’s transcendental body and killed Murasura who was a threat to all the demi gods. Lord Vishnu was pleased with her and named this shakti as Ekadashi as she was born on the 11th lunar day. Thus, Mata Ekadashi who is the protective power or shakti of Lord Vishnu was born on this day.
She got a boon from Lord Vishnu that whoever observes a fast on this day would be delivered from greatest sins and ultimately attain Lord Vishnu’s abode. This is the reason why people who want to begin Ekadashi fasting start on this day.
