In Mudgala Purana Lord Ganesha is said to take 8 different forms to destroy 8 inner demons (negative tendencies).
In the form of Vakratunda (Curved Trunk) the lord rides a lion to eradicate Matsara – The demon of Jealousy
You may chant the mantra “Vakra-Tunndda Maha-Kaaya Suurya-Kotti Samaprabha
Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryessu Sarvadaa”
Meaning – I meditate on Sri Ganesha who has a curved trunk, large body, and who has the brilliance of a million Suns, Dear Lord, Please make all my actions or work, free of obstacles, always.
Worshipping Ganesha in this form transforms jealousy into deep love and trust!
In HIS form of Ekadanta (The God with one tusk) HE rides a rat to kill Mada – the demon of vanity or pride.
You can chant the Ganesha Gayatri Mantra “Aum Ekadantaya Viddhamahe, Vakratundaya Dhimahi, Tanno Danti Prachodayat” to honor Ekadanta and seek HIS blessings to transform pride into humbleness.
In HIS form of Mahodara (The God with a big belly)rides a rat to kill Moha, the demon of delusion.
The third avatar was of Mahodara who vanquished Mohasura, the demon of Delusion and Confusion. The Mahodara avatar is an embodiment of the wisdom of Brahman. In this form the Lord is depicted with a pot belly and His mount is a mouse (shrew). Mahodara is an amalgamation of Vakratunda and Ekadanta forms. According to legends, Mohasura was also known as Daitya Raja or the King of the Asuras. He was a devotee of Surya Deva and dominated the three Lokas or worlds. All the sages, deities and gods were terrified of him. Then Lord Surya told the gods and sages to pray to Mahodara. Lord Ganesha was pleased with the worship and devotion of the sages and decided to eliminate Mohasura.
Lord Vishnu and Shukracharya advised Mohasura to surrender and pray to Mahodara. Eventually the demon surrendered to the Lord and praised him with utmost devotion. Mohasura asked for His forgiveness and promised to follow the path of righteousness. Lord Ganesha became pleased with his devotion and instructed him to return to Pataal Loka. All the sages and gods were relieved and praised Lord Mahodara.

In HIS Ghajanana form (The elephant faced one) Lord Ganesha conquers Lobha or Greed.
Greed keeps us on our toes running around and seeking contentment in external things. Every desire fulfilled or unfulfilled brings misery says Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. When a desire is fulfilled it gives rise to another desire, when unfulfilled it keeps us stagnant and unhappy. So worshipping Lord Ganesha in this form will help us look for true contentment, peace and happy that can only be found within!
In HIS Lambodhara form (Huge bellied Lord) Lord Ganesha conquers Krodha or Anger
All anger is about something which has already happened. Is it of any use getting angry about something which you cannot alter? The mind always vacillates between the past and the future. When the mind is in the past, it’s angry about something that has already happened; but anger is meaningless as we can’t alter the past. And when the mind is in the future, it’s anxious about something that may or may not happen. When the mind is in the present moment, anxiousness and anger appear so meaningless. – Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
In HIS Vikata form (deformed) Lord Ganesha conquers Kama or Lust.
Lust Demands and Demands destroy Love. So it is extremely important to conquer lust before it conquers you. Praying to Lord Ganesha in HIS Vikata form will help you transform Lust into Love!
In HIS Vignaraja form (Lord of Hindrances & Obstacles) Lord Ganesha destroys the demon “mama” or “self-indulgence”
which prevents us from moving forward in life.So in this form Lord Ganesha destroys hinderances and helps you overcome obstacles.
There is a verse in Ganapati upanishad that says “Maha vighnaat pramuchyate. Maha doshaat pramuchyate”
Which means Lord Ganesha will remove “maha vighnas”, all of your greatest obstacles, and will destroy all “doshas”, all the negativities that have been responsible for all your hardships.
In HIS Dhumravarna form Smoke colored one) Lord Ganesha destroys the demon “Ahamkara” which means Ego or Arrogance.
When you have tamasic ego, it is the easiest path to self-destruction. Ego cannot be controlled, it can only be surrendered. Sincere prayers to Dhumravarna will help you with that.
