Devshayani Ekadashi is a revered day in the Hindu calendar, marking the occasion when Lord Vishnu enters a state of Yogic sleep, known as “Yoga Nidra.” This sacred event occurs on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi) during the waxing phase of the Moon in the Vedic month of Ashada.

The term “Devshayani” combines two Sanskrit words: “Deva,” meaning God, and “Shayana,” meaning sleep. Thus, Devshayani Ekadashi signifies the beginning of the divine slumber of Lord Vishnu.

Dakshinayana – The Night of the Devas

Devshayani Ekadashi marks the commencement of the Dakshinayana period and the night of devas, during which Lord Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe, seeks rest. “Shayani” signifies “rest,” and on this divine day, Lord Vishnu enters a deep slumber on the magnificent Sesha Naga, floating amidst the cosmic ocean.

The Yogic sleep of Lord Vishnu persists for four months until the arrival of Prabodhini Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the bright fortnight in the Hindu month of Kartik (October-November). Known as Chaturmas, this period coincides with the monsoon season, creating an ideal atmosphere for inner reflection and spiritual practices. As Lord Vishnu awakens from his slumber on Prabodhini Ekadashi, devotees celebrate the end of Chaturmas, eagerly embracing the renewed spiritual energy.
