Magha Amavasya also known as Mauni Amavasya is a special day in the Vedic calendar that falls during the month of Magha. It’s a day when the moon is completely invisible in the sky, symbolizing a time of darkness and new beginnings. “Mauni” means silence, and on this day, people practice silence as a form of tapasya. The idea is that by being silent, we can reflect inwardly, cleanse our minds, and prepare for a fresh start.

  4. Practice the Shunya Mudra: This hand gesture is thought to help clear mental blocks and foster a sense of new beginnings. See below for instructions on how to perform the Shunya Mudra.
  5. Honoring Ancestors: Offer prayers to your ancestors and honor them. It is a beautiful way to express gratitude and seek their blessings. You can cook their favorite meal, offer it to them and eat it/distribute as a Prasad. You can also gather as a family and talk about them, recount stories about them.
  6. Donation and Acts of Kindness: Give to others, whether through monetary donations or acts of selfless service.
  7. Worship of Goddess Mahalakshmi: In the evening, light a lamp and chant or listen to the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam. This invites prosperity and well-being into your life.
