What is Argala?
The concept of Argala in Jyotish sheds light on the intricate dynamics of how planets or houses can influence or impact the results of that house or planet in a birth chart. In essence, Argala refers to the interplay between planets or houses and their ability to either support or obstruct each other’s effects on different aspects of life.
Derived from Sanskrit, Argala translates to “intervention” reflecting its role in illuminating the subtle interactions between planets and their effects on different aspects of life.

Primary Argala
Essentially there are 2 types of Argalas i.e Primary and Secondary and 2 sub-types i.e Shubh and Paap. Primary Argala manifests through the 2nd, 4th, and 11th houses counted from any planet or house, or the presence of planets in these houses. These configurations act as obstacles or interventions, hindering the growth or benefits associated with the particular planet or house.
For instance, if examining a person’s career (represented by the 10th house), the 2nd, 4th, and 11th houses’ influences may affect their professional development.
How can this be nullified?
The planets positioned in the 12th house can neutralize the Argala influence of the 2nd house. The planets placed in the 10th house can counteract the Argala effect of the 4th house. Similarly, planets in the 3rd house can neutralize the Argala impact of the 11th house.

Secondary Argala
Secondary Argala means that the 5th or 8th position from any planet or house causes an obstacle to the matters of that house or planet. Similar to Primary Argala, these configurations obstruct the growth or benefits related to the specific planet or house but in a minor way.
For example, if analyzing a person’s creativity and self-expression (represented by the 5th house), the influence of other planets 5th from this house i.e placed in the 9th house may impede their creative endeavours. If it’s a good placement it will be nullified if its a bad placement it will create a Paap argala.
How can this be nullified?
The minor argala presented by the 5th house can be nullified by the sign/planet placed in the 9th house. And finally the minor argala of the 8th will be nullified by the position in the 6th house.
Shubh and Paap Argala
The sub types refer to the type of argala – whether auspicious or malefic. We call is Shubh or Paap. Shubh-Argala occurs when the planets influencing Primary or Secondary Argala houses (2nd, 4th, 11th, or 5th) are natural benefic planets like Venus, Jupiter, or the Moon. In such cases, the intervention acts as a supportive force, enhancing growth and positive outcomes. For instance, if examining the 2nd house (representing wealth) and Venus influences it, the individual may experience financial abundance and prosperity.
Paap-Argala refers to a scenario in Vedic astrology where the planets influencing Primary Argala houses (2nd, 4th, 11th) or the Secondary Argala house (5th) are natural malefic planets like the Sun, Mars, Saturn, or the lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu). In simpler terms, if these “Paap Grah” planets are involved, it signifies malefic intervention. This means that their influence may create obstacles or challenges related to the specific planet or house under consideration.
