Holika Dahan – March 24, 2024

Holika Dahan, celebrated on the eve of Holi to celebrate the victory of good over evil.

The story unfolds with the Asura king Hiranyakashyap seeking vengeance against Lord Vishnu for his brother’s demise. Granted a boon by Lord Brahma, Hiranyakashyap was nearly indestructible. Yet, his son Prahlad’s unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu remained unshaken despite numerous attempts on his life.

In his attempts to eliminate Prahlad, Hiranyakashipu enlisted the help of his sister, Holika, who was immune to fire as she was wearing a robe. She sat on a pyre with Prahlad in her lap, believing she would emerge unharmed while Prahlad would perish. However, a robe flew from Holika to Prahlad, protecting him from the flames while Holika burned to ashes. This miraculous event is celebrated as Holika Dahan, symbolizing the protection of good in the face of evil.
