There is a very ancient temple in a town called Guruvayur. Lord Vishnu is worshipped as Guruvayurappan in that temple. Guru means Jupiter or Brihaspati, Vayu means the wind God connected with Saturn, Appan means lord.

This temple is extremely powerful as Lord Guruvayurappan was worshipped by Lord Krishna himself.

The Origin of Guruvayurappan

Vasudeva and Devaki who are parents of Lord Krishna worshipped an idol of Vishnu. When Lord Krishna was growing up HE also worshipped that idol. Lord Krishna told Uddhava that after the city of Dwaraka submerges in the ocean you will find a statue of Lord Vishnu which has to be established in the right place by Brihaspati himself. He told Uddhava that Brihaspati would come to him to do it.

When the city of Dwaraka submerged, Uddhava was standing at the shore and he saw a statue of Lord Vishnu floating in the ocean and Lord Vayu kept bringing it closer to Uddhava. He picked up the statue and kept it close to his heart and within a few minutes he found Brihaspati walk towards him.

Brihaspati asked Vayu to take him towards the perfect place where they can establish this idol. When they were flying above the costal town of Kerala, both of them felt the urge to establish the idol there.

So the idol was established there and since Guru and Vayu were involved in this, the place came to be known as Guruvayur and the idol was called Guruvayurappan.

Worshipping Lord Guruvayurappan is one of the best remedies to manage the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. It would help the energies of Jupiter and Saturn to work harmoniously and take us towards happiness, bliss and prosperity.

Adi Shankaracharya’s Govindashtakam

Adi Shankaracharya who promoted advaita or non duality was once flying over Guruvayur with Sage Narada. A very strong force made him come down and bow down to Lord Guruvayurappan. Adi Shankaracharya was filled with love and devotion for the lord and composed the Govindashtakam in praise of Guruvayurappan.

So you can learn to chant or meditate or listen to Govindashtakam everyday to honor and worship Lord Guruvayurappan.

King Parikshit and Janamejaya

There are many stories that speak about the miracles that happen at this temple. One such is the story of King Parikshit (grand son of Arjuna) who was killed by snakes. So his son Janamejaya wanted a revenge and organized a huge Sarpa yagya to kill all the snakes in the world. This resulted in a curse where he suffered from leprosy. He was suffering with a lot of pain and that is when Sage Dattatreya advised him to pray to Lord Krishna at Guruvayur.

So Janamejaya went to Guruvayur temple and performed penance with utmost sincerity and devotion  and he was healed miraculously.

Many other miracles have happened in Guruvayur and until today it is such a powerful temple.
